Why we are called Queer

Now and again we get negative reactions because of our name. We are believed to ridicule and humiliate Queen and Freddie Mercury. These reactions are of course because of the primary meaning of the word queer, namely "homosexual". From our point of view it is impossible to regard "Queer" as an insult unless you find that being homosexual is a bad thing. Some people have big problems with accepting gay people, we'd like to think that we don't.
We chose the name "Queer" based on the following:
  • its obvious typographical resemblance to "Queen"
  • on the fact that Freddie in an interview said that he of course was aware of the homosexual implications of the name "Queen"
  • in the media Queen were sometimes referred to as a gay band. "A gay band"? What is that? Media GaGa.
  • we find different reactions to our name extremely funny
  • for some strange reason the name is very easy to remember

    So to you who have problems with us being called Queer, try to see it from our point of view. With a reasonable amount of humour? :-)

    We have explained why we´re called Queer to Queen and its management and got positive response saying "no problem, in fact we wish you luck". We'd like to think that this means they are not offended. Certainly offending Queen has never been our intention, quite the opposite actually. WE WILL ROCK YOU, darlings!
